Chapter 11: The Smell of Our Own

“Why didn’t you tell me that he was your fucking brother?”

“Why didn’t you show me the fucking photograph, Joe?”

I shrug, as best I can, with one hand wrapped around Nico’s neck.

“You were upset. I had it covered.”

“My mother married his father. We’re barely related. What with the age gap, I was more like his mother than his sister.”

I shake my head. “I can imagine the useful life lessons you passed on—how to succeed in the fucking skin trade. You’re fucking deranged.”

Nico cackles mischievously, but doesn’t say a word.

Cherry unlocks her car and gets in, when I realise that her daughter’s bulky car seat is taking up half of the back seat.

I’m considering the safest place to stash Nico when I hear the howling siren of a prowl car on Seaway Road.

“Fuck.”

I pop the boot and bundle him in—clambering in after him and tugging the boot shut behind me.

“Cosy. Wait until I tell Julian.”

“You’ve turned your last trick for a while, mate. You swallowed something that didn’t belong to you, and I need to get those stones back, even if I have to turn you inside out.”

“Shit!”

He fumbles at his neck. It looks like an imitation razor blade on a chain. He snaps it off the necklace and I struggle to adjust my position, to see what the fuck he’s doing. Only when he starts hacking at my Achilles tendon, through my jeans, do I realise that it’s not an imitation—it’s a real fucking blade.

I kick him in the face three times before he finally goes slack.
